As some of you know, I've been sharing a room here at UCSF since I got here four days ago and, since I'm having a bone marrow transplant, I'm supposed to have my own room. Well, I got trumped out of a single room with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge just yesterday and then started having this nagging fear that I was going to get my Dad's old room, number 1122. Ian urged me to tell the nursing staff, but everyone knows how I hate to be "that guy" ... Well, it turns out 1122 came up next available, but someone had put a note in my chart against the room (thanks, bebe!) and now they're doing some extra shuffling so that I don't have to sleep amidst the ghost of my Dad's experience any more than I already am. I am so grateful.

Dear Katie,
I am a nurse so I know about this room stuff. Katie, we as nurses understand this kind of pain and suffering, really and honestly for true. We would not consider you "that guy" because you really have a legitimate request and we would not want you to go through any more emotional pain than you have been through and are going through. We do this kinf of room shuffeling all the time for a lot less reason than you have. Let your requests be known and help them take care of you both physically and emotionally-they will not know unless you tell them. We actually feel so mcuh better if we can do something extra like this to help you get through this time. So Katie bring on your requests loud and clear, please.
Much love,
Mom

Dear Zach,
Don and I went to a train show today-they had all kinds of neat stuff and model trains running on tracks. One even had real smoke coming from the stack. I got you and your mom something there that you can do together while she is getting better at home. Keep blowing those kisses to your mom.
Hugs abd kisses from Oklahoma

Katie,
Glad you like your new room. The view sounds wonderful (at least for a hosp. room). Have you changed the pictures yet? :) Grandma loved the pictures of you and Zach. She could hardly believe he's so big. Sent Kent Ian's email with the blog address. He's hoping that the bmt will be the best for you.
Talked with Kim tonight and told her about your bmt. She said to say hi and wishes you the best. She's in Liberia working with teacher ed. students who live in refugee camps. The political situation, as apparently it is in most of those camps (like the one she worked in while in Thailand) is really terrible--graft, favors for $$ or more political clout, etc. She said there is very little concern for the people per se.
Take care. I hope the drugs cause you less discomfort now.
