Homeward bound ...

Great news! My counts are starting to climb, which means the new donor immune system is propagating. What this means is that things are working and I get to go HOME a week early! Tonight is my last night in the hospital and I should arrive home to Ian's parents' place sometime in the afternoon. I am thrilled. No more waking up in the middle of the night for vital signs, no more terrible hospital food, no more roaming the ward for exercise. I can't wait to breathe the fresh air outside, play trains with my son and have a meal with my family.

The picture above demonstrates how gracious the nurses have been with Zach. Today, when I called him at home to tell him my good news, he and Grandmama were playing hospital. Zach said he was the doctor and that Grandmama was just "a little bit sick." He has also taken to wearing the tie from my husband's robe around his neck and calling it his "trolley." Apparently, it's really cute, but even more importantly, the fact that he can work out his feelings in a play setting is really significant.

I know the Bone Marrow Transplant process is far from over, but I've cleared the first big hurdle and I see nothing but positive signs.

So long, 11 Long
How I wish we had no need to know you
We'd like to say
We've enjoyed the stay
But that just wouldn't be true

I'm able to see
the care you've given my family
and that I will never forget
What sweet irony it seems
How the world's humanity
Lies in a place I never want to be again

Dear Peter,
I love your poem. Believe it or not the nurses hope to never see you all again, not because they don't like you but that Katie is well and can go home. They know they did their job well and a success means everything to them.
So take Katie home with faith that you won't have to see that place again.
Love,
Mom

Katie, Your mom and I have kept in touch all these years so I have been sort of up to date on you, Peter, and your lives. To read your blogs, is to feel the strength that you get from your family and friends. I'm proud to say I knew you when you were a really little girl- remember the summers at the beach?? and now you've overcome one of life's biggest hurdles- and I know you will be fine- how could you not be? You're Katie and you could always do it- no matter what. I am sorry that you and your family have had to go through this but faith and family will sustain you as you complete your recuperation. I am so glad you've have started to keep in touch with your mom- remember she loves you! By the way Zach looks like Peter when he was that age!
Keep up the good work! Gretchen

Aaron:

That's great! Please keep the blogs coming once you are done sleeping, eating yummy food and playing! Tell us what your cravings are!

I'm glad you got the CD. Hopefully it's good. Sorry I didn't write sooner. I've been off in Tucson helping out with parents -- stepdad had back surgery. No fun.

I hope that you are snuggled in a comfy bed with yummy snacks and a cuddly family!

Mom:

Dear katie,
I agree, keep up the BLOG when you are ready. I sure enjoy keeping up with you. How is the medication going? I've been thinking about you all day since your email and hope that something I said would ease your anxiey some-I hope, I hope, I hope. you deserve a little down time and some super rest and relaxation now.
Daon and I painted on the guest house today and it was 90 degrees with 2oo% humidity. But we got another side done-had to put 2 coats ont o cover the blue. I think it's going to look really nice.
Remember that summer that Jerry Montgomery and crew painted out house is Marietta. It was Salmon with bergundy trim-your dad didn't like it too well but I thought it felt warm and inviting.
I worked on the kitchen and painted it peach.
Well, we are goign to town to the framer's market and then grab something to eat.
Keep us posted when you fel up to it.
Much love,
Mom

Bridget Zarling:
